Polite Speech : PAST

1) Past (Written)

:: This form is used in written Korean, such as books, newspapers and etc. However, polite written form verbs can be also used in polite speech. For instance you’ll hear a news reporter using polite verbs in their speech.

To change a dictionary form to a polite past written verb form,
First, change it to casual past written form, then change 다 to 습니다.

 

  • 가다 → 갔다 → 갔습니다 = went
  • 오다 → 왔다 → 왔습니다 = came
  • 먹다 → 먹었다 → 먹었습니다 = ate
  • 날다 → 날았다 → 날았습니다 = flew

2) Past (Spoken)

 

To change a dictionary form to a polite past spoken form,
first, change it to casual past spoken form, then add 요 at the end.

 

  • 가다 → 갔어 → 갔어요 = went
  • 오다 → 왔어 → 왔어요 = came
  • 먹다 → 먹었어 → 먹었어요 = ate
  • 날다 → 날았어 → 날았어요 = flew
