Polite Speech : PRESENT

1) Present (Written)

 

1. Verb stem ending has no final consonant, 받침 → attach ㅂ니다

 

  • 가다 → 가 + ㅂ니다 → 갑니다 = go
  • 오다 → 오 + ㅂ니다 → 옵니다 = come
  • 말 하다 → 말 하 + ㅂ니다 → 말합니다 = speak

 

2. Verb stem ending has a final consonant, 받침 → attach 습니다.

 

  • 읽다 → 읽습니다 = to read
  • 듣다 → 듣습니다 = to listen/hear
  • 먹다 → 먹습니다 = to eat

 

3. Verb stem ending has ㄹ as final consonant, 받침 → change ㄹ to ㅂ, then add 니다.

 

  • 날다 → 납니다 = to fly
  • 놀다 → 놉니다 = to play, have fun

2) Present (Spoken)

 

1. To change a dictionary form to a polite present spoken form,
first, change it to casual present spoken form, then add 요 at the end.

 

  • 가다 → 가 → 가요 = to go
  • 사다 → 사 → 사요 = to buy
  • 하다 → 해 → 해요 = to do
  • 말하다 → 말해 → 말해요 = to speak
  • 보다 → 봐 → 봐요 = to see/look/watch
  • 꿈꾸다 → 꿈꿔 → 꿈꿔요 = to dream
