Double Consonants

쌍자음 (ssangjaeum)

Korean has five tensed consonants, which are written with the five ‘double’ consonant letters.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that the word ‘쌍’ (ssang) is added to the word ‘자음’ (jaeum). In Korean, ‘쌍’ means a ‘pair’, hence the word, ‘쌍자음’ means ‘double consonants’.
