How to address people in Korean: www.lingoh.me

You probably have read before that Korean language has casual and polite way to speak. Even when you address people you need to be mindful of the age, occupation, and the societal role of the addressed. Below shows different ways of addressing people.

Largely, I divided them into 4 different levels of politeness. Level 1 is the most casual relationship and Level 4 is the most polite relationship between a speaker and a listener.

  1. Familiar or Intimate relationship
  2. Non-intimate relationship between persons of similar ages, or a polite way of addressing a subordinate
  3. Addressing a stranger
  4. Addressing an elder or a superior / Addressing someone by referring to one’s occupation or societal role
